Media Literacy Skills for the New Millenials
|
Students begin this unit by delving deep into mass media and advertising to increase their media literacy skills. I am personally very passionate about this unit because I believe it is vital for all young adults to be able to comprehend and analyze the messages that are being sent by media twenty-four hours a day.
We focus primarily on how children/young adults are used by marketers by viewing the documentary "Consuming KIds: The Commercialization of Childhood." The film traces the evolution of youth advertising to explore the effects of commercialism and consumerism on the lives of children. We've also added parts of the brand new documentary by Frontline, "Generation Like" to our curriculum. This film explores teens and their quest for identity through social media and exposes how corporations and marketers are using that to their advantage to create a cycle of advertising where children are being advertised to by corporations while advertising for the corporations at the same time. |

After we've mastered the art of analyzing and evaluating print ads, we begin analyzing commercials. Using Retro Junk Commercials we are able to look at commercials from the 1950s through present day to watch the evolution of advertising.

Investigate: Inquiring & AnalyzingStudents are charged with the task of inquiring about a problem at our school or in the community that they want to solve. They must justify their reasoning for why the problem is important.
Based on their chosen design task, they will need to construct a research plan for what they will need to learn or research in order to solve their problem. This is a very important part of the design cycle process because it develops their problem solving abilities. During the research process, students to seek out other products or services that already address their problem, and then show how their solution is better. The goal is for the students to see how the Design Cycle improves the process for solving a problem. They will use all the marketing strategies and advertising techniques they've learned in order to promote their product or service. |
Plan: Developing IdeasStudents are given the design specifications for the design task. These are the minimum requirements needed to earn a passing score on the project.
Students are responsible for determining their own success criteria for their final product. They must figure out how they will decide if their product is successful and how they will measure that success. With this unit, I encourage students to use a survey so they can learn to use functions in MS Excel to help manage their data. However, students are welcome and encouraged to come up with a different method! For the other strands of the Design Journal requirements, students will keep a planning sketchbook that they will fill with feasible design ideas. Th |
