Investigate: Inquiring & AnalyzingFor this Design Cycle, we have a very clear end-product in sight that is less driven by identifying a problem and researching to identify a solution. We are using the Design Cycle as a vehicle to learn how to research a specific topic with specific goals for information we're trying to acquire.
We listen to other podcasts to determine what the purpose of a podcast is (why would someone seek out and choose to listen to a podcast) and how they can make their podcasts better or more interesting. Listen to Previous Poetry Podcasts HereRemember, Podcasts aren't just about poetry! Podcasts can be about any topic a person or group of people would like to share with the world!

Plan: Developing IdeasStudents are given Design Specifications which provide a framework for their project. They know their creation must meet certain requirements for what it will look/sound like. Students will also develop success criteria which will tell them whether or not their Poetry Podcast is successful.
Students spend time surveying poetry collections both offline and online to find a poem and poet that he or she likes best. Afterwards, students research their chosen poet in order to write a short biography as well as a statement explaining why he or she chose that particular poet and poem.

Create: Creating the SolutionBefore students actually begin creating the podcast itself, they must first outline a plan that is sufficient for peers to follow for creating their project; they should be able to teach others to make a podcast.
Students learn the tools of Garage Band by following tutorials and experimenting on their own. Students will create background music to match the mood of their poem, along with intro, outro, and transition music. Students then record their poems and edit the vocals and music into a finished podcast. |
